What is the Most Popular Plastic Surgery Procedure?

Plastic Surgery

The cosmetic surgery industry is booming in the United States. A larger number of Americans are getting plastic surgery now than at any other time in history. The procedures that they look for are varied. Some want to make adjustments to their face, combat the aging process or get rid of stubborn fat.

The medical community has kept track of the most popular forms of plastic surgery over the last year. It is very clear that certain procedures are more popular than others and that certain procedures are growing in popularity. Breast augmentation does remain the most popular plastic surgery procedure.

Surgical Cosmetic Procedures by the Numbers

First, let’s look at the numbers. The top five surgical procedures in 2016 included breast augmentation, liposuction, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery and a facelift.

It is estimated that 290,467 breast augmentation procedures were performed last year with the goal of either enlarging the size or changing the shape of the breasts. This makes breast augmentation even more popular this year than it was the year before.

Patients Desire a More Natural Look

Something that cosmetic surgeons are realizing is that while the popularity of breast augmentation procedures is not new, what is changing is what patients are asking for. A few decades ago, patients were primarily looking for procedures to drastically increase the size of their breasts. Now, many patients are looking for a slightly less noticeable augmentation. They want results that look natural. As a result, patients feel happier with their breast implants after their plastic surgery procedure.

Breast Implants to Improve Body Image

Micromastia is a condition where a young woman’s breasts never develop. They are left with two nipples on a flat chest. Other women battle with asymmetrical breasts. They do not match in size or in shape. One could be a D cup and the other a B cup. This can be very disheartening.

For these women, getting breast implants not only improves their body image, but it also improves their self-esteem. After undergoing breast augmentation, they feel more confident in their clothing, they feel more attractive and they feel more feminine.

While surgical procedures like breast augmentation are growing in popularity, so are non-surgical procedures. Last year, the top five minimally-invasive procedures in 2016 included BOTOX®, soft tissue fillers, chemical peels, laser hair removal and microdermabrasion.
