If you’re a grown woman and your chest is still underdeveloped, you may find yourself feeling self-conscious. If this is the case then breast implants might be an option. A symmetrical and well-developed bust line not only enhances your femininity but can make you more confident, whether in your personal life or your professional life.

What to Do First

If you’ve decided on breast implants, you’ll need to do some research before you choose a plastic surgeon. What size do you want your bust to be, ultimately? Do you want silicone or saline implants? You might even need to think of buying a new wardrobe to accommodate your new figure.

After you’ve decided on the type of implant, you’ll need to have a consultation with a plastic surgeon. The surgeon will need to examine your breasts carefully, and you’ll put on a bra with a sizer to get an idea of your final shape.

Preparing for Breast Augmentation

The surgeon or nurse will tell you how to prepare for the surgery during your consultation. Besides getting a mammogram, you’ll need to stop smoking — if you do — and discontinue any drugs that can compromise your healing process. Since you’ll be having general anesthesia, you’ll need to arrange for someone to take you home after the operation, and you’ll need to fast for a least six hours beforehand.

The Breast Implant Procedure

There are several ways for the surgeon to place breast implants. They can make an incision under the crease of your breast, in your armpit, around your areoles or tunnel the implant up through a incision in your navel. The implant can be placed under the breast and against the chest wall, or it can be placed behind the muscles of the chest wall.

After the surgery, the surgeon closes the incisions with sutures and protects and supports your breasts with a special bra and dressings. Someone should stay with you for at last a couple of days when you get home, and make sure to fill any prescriptions the doctor writes before the surgery. You won’t feel like going to the drugstore right after your operation.

Your breasts will be swollen and a bit uncomfortable for a while after the implants are placed, but this will go away. One way to ease the discomfort is to sleep and rest with your head elevated. Do not raise your arms for a least a week, and simply take time to rest and recover. Make sure that you keep all follow-up appointments with our doctor. After a few months you’ll see the final results of your breast implant surgery.
