Having acne is almost a rite of passage for many teenagers. The red, raised bumps seem to come at the worst possible time of life when teens are at their most awkward phase and want to look attractive to others. Although the skin condition usually gets better in a few years, it can still leave a permanent mark on the skin in the form of acne scars. This is where micro-needling can help.

What is Micro-Needling?

Micro-needling is a skin treatment involving the use of a special device containing many very fine needles. The treatment helps in breaking down old scar tissue and spurring skin cell regeneration and skin rejuvenation.

Micro-needling creates many tiny micro-channels in the skin that are filled with new skin cells. New skin cell production causes the formation of brand new elastin and collagen fibers. Along with the new skin comes enhanced blood flow to remove waste products from cells and an increased level of nourishment through that same blood flow.

Micro-Needling and Acne Scars

This treatment helps reduce the appearance of scars by encouraging the formation of new skin that rises up to replace old skin that was affected by the treatment process. Your skin will be remodeled, and scars due to acne, injury, or surgery will be minimized.

In addition to being a great standalone treatment, micro-needling also yields additional results with repeated treatments. Since the results are cumulative, serious scars should benefit from multiple treatment sessions. Within a week or two, your skin should be noticeably improved. A few months may be needed before full results are apparent. However, it all depends on the unique situation.

Can Micro-Needling Be Performed with Other Treatments?

Yes! In fact, micro-needling greatly enhances the effectiveness of topical skin care applications. Your skin has an outer barrier that will not allow certain molecules to pass through, limiting the effectiveness of certain topicals. The very small micro-openings formed during the micro-needling process allow for far greater skin penetration of topical gels, creams, solutions, and ointments, including PRP.

In addition to minimizing acne scars, micro-needling stimulates blood circulation, works on all skin types, and diminishes the signs of lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and blemishes.
