How Is Breast Augmentation Surgery Performed?
If you are interested in breast augmentation, it’s important that you know what to expect during the process. The following is a complete breakdown of how breast augmentation surgery is performed.
Before Surgery
Before you can schedule a breast augmentation, you need to consult with our board-certified plastic surgeon. During your consultation appointment, we will examine your natural breasts and discuss your desired outcome to determine whether breast surgery is the right choice for you.
Some clients may benefit more from a breast lift, which is a different cosmetic procedure. Others will need a breast lift in addition to breast augmentation. These things can only be determined by having a consultation appointment.
If you are deemed a good candidate for breast augmentation, we will discuss the best method of augmentation to meet your needs. Some patients are better suited for fat transfer, while others will need silicone or saline implants. The type of augmentation you receive will depend largely on the results you’re looking to achieve.
After selecting a date for your surgery, you will have to get complete medical clearance from your regular physician. This is usually done in the days leading up to your procedure.
Medical clearance will involve a complete physical examination, blood panels, and diagnostic imaging, in some cases. This process ensures that you meet the health requirements to go under general anesthesia.
On the night before your breast surgery, you will be asked to refrain from eating or drinking after midnight. As an anesthetic precaution, your stomach must be empty during your procedure.
During the Procedure
Your procedure will begin when you are put under anesthesia. Once you are fully asleep, discreet incisions will be made through which your implants can be inserted. These incisions may be in the armpit area or along the crease beneath your breast. The placement of your incisions will depend on the type of implants you are receiving.
If you are receiving silicone implants, the entire implant will be placed at once. For saline implants, the empty shell is inserted and then filled with saline after it is in place. The incisions are then closed with small sutures, and you are transported to an aftercare area to be monitored until you awaken.
The process for breast augmentation with fat transfer is very different from receiving implants. If you are having breast surgery that involves fat transfer, the procedure will begin with liposuction.
Small incisions will be made in an area of the body where there is unwanted excess fat. This may be the stomach, thighs, arms, or buttocks. A thin tube called a cannula will then be inserted through this incision to gently suction away fat cells. These fat cells are then purified and injected into the breasts to increase their volume.
Recovering from Breast Augmentation
Some breast surgery patients will need to remain in our aftercare center overnight for monitoring, but many are able to return home the same day. You will be discharged with bandaging in place on your chest. This is usually removed after the first week.
You will need to rest and avoid strenuous activities for the first few days after your breast augmentation. It is important that you avoid anything that could cause direct impact or trauma to the chest. Activities that require excessive upper arm movement should be avoided for about two weeks.
Most people are able to return to work and resume everyday activities after three to five days.
